Optical Therapeutic Window

Scientific research shows that sunlight affects human cells in ways similar to its effects on plant cells.

  • The therapeutic optical window for humans is 600–1300 nm.
  • The safe wavelength range is approximately 600–900 nm, which can penetrate skin up to a depth of 4 cm.

Cellular Mechanisms

When light is absorbed, it stimulates mitochondria in human cells to release:

  • Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) – the main energy currency of cells, powering muscle movement, nerve signals, and other biological processes.
  • Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) – highly reactive oxygen containing molecules essential for cell signaling and immune response (but harmful in excess).
  • Nitric Oxide (NO) – a gaseous signaling molecule that relaxes blood vessels (vasodilation), lowering blood pressure and increasing blood flow, oxygen, and nutrient delivery.

Adequate red light therapy promotes better cell proliferation, motility, and reproduction.

Dose Response (The Arndt Schulz Curve)

Light therapy follows a biphasic dose response:

  • Too little light → minimal effect.
  • Too much light → inhibition or negative effects.

The goal is to find the “sweet spot” within the therapeutic window.

Key Variables

  • Wavelength – Determines penetration depth.
    • Blue light → skin surface.
    • Red light (600–700 nm) → 0.5–2 cm depth.
    • Near infrared (NIR, 760–930 nm) → 3–4 cm depth.
  • The safe wavelength range is approximately 600–900 nm, which can penetrate skin up to a depth of 4 cm.
  • Irradiance (Power Density) – Measured in mW/cm² (or W/m²; 1 mW/cm² = 10 W/m²). The typical therapeutic window is 10–50 mW/cm².
  • Energy Density (Fluence) – Measured in J/cm².
    Formula: Session time (seconds) = [Target Dose (J/cm²) × 1000] / Power Density (mW/cm²)
  • Penetration & Skin Tone – Dark colored skin absorbs more red and NIR light, generating more heat and reducing therapeutic effect. Use lower intensity and longer session times.

Important: Wavelengths above 1000 nm resonate with water molecules and produce excess heat, making them less safe for general photobiomodulation.
